Title: 72 Polaris ATX 530 Custom
Post by: Winter_Thunder on June 26, 2009, 11:31:18 PM
A few months ago I decided it would be fun to take a 72 Polaris ATX 335 chassis and fit a 530 free air fuji engine into it.  So, I rounded up a good chassis to start with.  Next, I got a 530 free air engine from a friend.  Engine was in rough shape with a bad cylinder and piston.  Got a nos set of cylinders, pistons, rings, and wrist pins.  Also came up with a correct set of free air heads.  Here are some pics.

Cool project Jesse...  2utp
You gonna update the ignition system with some modern parts? I'd throw some Indy parts in there as long as you got it that far apart.

Not sure what you mean by adding indy parts to the ignition system?  Didn't even know that was possible and what parts would even be updated?  Sounds interesting though.

Finished the engine this afternoon.  Fully rebuilt crank with new bearings and rods, nos cylinders, pistons, rings, and wrist pins.  This thing might actually run now. 8)

Well, due to come unfortunate circumstances ("bad welder") I will not be using the original 72 tunnel.  Instead I will be using a 73 tunnel which is very similar to the 72 tunnel.  Just have to make some minor changes.  I will also be using the 73 suspension which is a lot better ride.

Well, got the mock up done with the new 73 chassis.  Decided to go with a stock pipe and it fits perfectly in the chassis.  Made some custom aluminum mounts to secure the pipe so it clears the ski spindle and tie rod linkage.  Now I need to tear it back down and blast and weld to get ready for paint.

Do yourself a favor and take it to Sprocket for welding this time.

Hey this is a cool restoration, I also have a 73 Custom 530. It is just a rider but it goes like hell.  Where are you located at in MN, I'd like to stop over and take a look sometime if you wouldn't mind. I'm in Fargo, ND.  I'll post up some pictures of mine sometime but it's pretty beat up. ;D

Well its only been 5 years picking away at this project but heres what it looks like as of tonight.  Going to ride it next season, tune it, and get any bugs worked out of it.  Then it will get torn back down and painted up nice.  Just need to put carbs on, put togther a primary clutch, and a few other little things.  Tunnel, rear skid, skis, and handle bars are 73.  The rest is 72.  I have a set of correct 72 skis but they need re chroming so I'll run these spray bombed 73 skis for the first year.
