68 Polaris Super Voyager
« on: February 15, 2013, 05:18:14 PM »
What seems like a lifetime ago I purchased and started to restore a 1968 Polaris Super Voyager. These sleds were very unique having a 2 speed transmission w/ reverse & a 30" wide track. They are tanks.
I found the sled under atree about 10 miles from my home. Bought it and brought it home

The machine was purchased new to be used as a trail groomer near Milwaukee Wi. It was retired in 1973 and sat outside since 1975.

When i got it home I stripped everything. All metal parts were sand blasted and primed/painted.

I even painted the cleats.

After years of screwing around and finding some parts, I got it running today. It runs and idles perfect and will be at Braapfest next weekend.

Sweet!  Be neat to get a couple of those and a couple of Alpines and do a very wide track ride!
I own the most snowmobiles of anyone I know in Georgia.

Great job on that tank. 2utp Any idea on what that thing weighs? I would say reverse is a must have.

I do not know what it weighs, but know the track is 100 or more. I would guess the whole machine is around 400-500. Just a guess. Because of the 30" track it does not appear that it can get stuck. I am not sure that I want to test my theory.

In high gear it only goes around 30mph. To get more speed I would have to change the top gear. Not sure if I want/need to. It is what it is, a lumbering tank of steel on snow.

Anyone have any idea where i could find a replacement mirror for it? I figure it was aftermarket? Or maybe replace the base with some form of a ag mirror? Where does one look for a 30" snow flap?

I think I'd replace that mirror with aftermarket 60's period on a post, NOS. Gotta be something out there that would look right. Maybe something similar to this?

Some real perserverance went into your restore, Craig. Sled looks great!

If you don't mind, I'll add a couple pics from last year's St. Germain weekend, when GP placed the new engine in it and aligned the clutches...

I bet adikhed could pull his arguin' stump with that baby.   2utp
When you pull off the track and the guy behind you pulls up next to you and yells "Great race!"...it may not have been a great race until that very moment.
