'74 AC VIP - I wish I had the room for one!
« on: September 01, 2010, 08:31:43 AM »
I don't have the room to store it or the time to fix it up, but I've always wanted one of these. I know they were slow and heavy, but the concept of the Catamatic is just too cool.

I've had a bunch of VIP's,I still have a few, they were all great sleds,... except for the trans fliud leaks that can't be remedied... heavy?, 420#... makes for a solid ride, and with the low center of gravity they are excellent on the trail.
If you're having braking issues it has absolutely nothing to do with the drive system... The Vip was the first 'Cat, and maybe the first sled ever, to have a disk brake attached directly to the drive axle... assuring positive braking directly to the track and eliminating any slipping or delay that is common with secondary clutch braking systems. If properly adjusted you biggest problem is skidding, and with the steel cleated track that is held to a minimum.
I talked to the guy with the sled you're talking about, it sounds like a good deal, and I thought about picking it up, but I got enough right now so I passed it up. My biggest reason was the seat, nobody makes a good repro and the aftermarket is the wrong color.
